Sedation Dentistry

Millions of Americans skip dental appointments, avoid routine exams and suffer dental pain because they are too afraid to go to the dentist. If anxiety has compromised your dental health, Fife Dental Care has a solution: sedation dentistry.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry, also known as oral conscious sedation or relaxation dentistry, is the practice of administering an oral sedative before a dental visit to allow a patient to relax while he or she undergoes restorative or cosmetic dentistry procedures. (If necessary, subsequent doses or other mild sedatives like nitrous oxide may be administered at our office as well.) The sedatives used are commonly prescribed medicines that have been the subject of years of study, and to practice sedation dentistry, dentists must receive special training so they know how these sedatives interact with other medications.

Dr. Fife is licensed by the State of New Mexico to practice Oral Conscious Sedation Dentistry. Fife Dental Care takes patient safety very seriously, so we carefully monitor patients’ vital signs for the duration of the visit while they are under dental sedation.

When is Sedation Dentistry Needed?

While we strive to make all dental work pain-free, the discomfort of even a cleaning or periodontal care may cause too much anxiety. For other patients, dental sedation may only be necessary to overcome anxiety associated with more involved procedures like endodontics and oral surgery. Whether or not you are a good candidate for or would benefit from dental sedation is a decision you should make with Dr. Fife.
